The Planets

We've been learning all about the planets, and even coming up with our own mnemonic to remember them by.  What is your mnemonic for remembering the order of the planets? What interesting facts have you found out about the planets in our solar system?

500 Words

Year 5 have been given the challenge of writing a short story to submit into the BBC's 500 words competition. The creative juices have begun flowing, and we have planned our stories. Today we move onto writing them! It's going to require a lot of delving into our writer's tool kits - that the children have spent most of their school days assembling - but I think the results are going to be worth it!  

What is your story about? Does it have a twist or a turn? How are you going to hook the judges of the competition, and make sure they don't want to put your tale down?

Modal Verbs

Remember what 'mode' means in maths? It's how often something occurs. 

Modal verbs are the same. They tell you how often something happens or the likelihood of something happening.

Mesmerising Measurements

At the beginning of the year we hopped over fractions, skipped over decimals and now we have jumped into measurement..  It all links with our Ancient Greek topic, as we are going to be learning a lot about the Olympics both in and out of the classroom.

We are learning about the different ways sentences are made up.  This week we have focused particularly on clauses and phrases.

Exhibiting our talents!

After all of the hard work around Black Georgians in Year 5, we were lucky enough to see some of our work exhibited in a special showcase at the Black Cultural Archives on Friday and Saturday. 

We popped along on Friday to see our comic strips  and poetry displayed for the public to peruse and, as you can tell from our photos, we are very proud of our achievements!

 

Huge thanks to the Black Cultural Archives, Adissa (our poetry whiz) and Steve Marchant (comic skills guru) for organising and working with us! We had a great time.

 

 

We'll be making a book of all of our work, so come and have a look if you didn't get a chance to visit the exhibition. 

Factor Fun

We have been learning all about factors this week, and using our knowledge to solve factor triangles. 

Using mathematical vocabulary, can you explain to your peers what a factor is?

Maritime Madness

This week Year 5 went to the National Maritime Museum to learn more about the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.  

What was the most interesting thing you learnt? What really shocked you? How did the exhibition make you think differently about enslavement?

Comic Chaos!

The wonderful comic creator Steve Marchant came into Year 5 Blue today to show us how to create a comic strip based around our topic Black Georgians.  

Year 5 Red are yet to have the privilege of working with Steve, so 5 Blue, what would your top tips for 5 Red be?

Welcome to Year 5

We've been working hard for the last 2 weeks in Year 5, and by now you should have an idea of what to expect over the rest of the year.  Learning is always about challenging yourself further and with that in mind I wondered about your personal learning challenge this year. For instance, mine is going to be to learn more about editing my own work.
